South Australia Travel 3 Places You Just Can't Miss

South Australia travel will find you in a quieter part of Australia with a smaller population who are very proud of their local attractions.  This state is a popular holiday destination for Aussies as well as international tourists.  We’ve spent time in the well known Barossa Valley and taken a ferry ride to uniquely beautiful Kangaroo Island.  The northern part of this state features some of Australia’s amazing deserts and is a completely different part of South Australia typically referred to as ‘The Outback’.

Barossa Valley

This area is generally known to as the wine capital of Australia.  Established by German immigrants who settled there to escape religious persecution in their homeland in the mid 1800’s, this is an absolutely picturesque place.  With carefully tended vineyards, impressive wineries as well as quaint homes and towns, this is a place where we reveled in the benefits of world class wine and food.

The original Germanic influence on wine and food is still very apparent in this area and throughout the nearby Adelaide Hills.  Our stay in a beautiful ‘bed and breakfast’ right in the centre of ‘The Barossa’ provided us with a bunch of happy memories around gourmet markets, local restaurants and music.

Kangaroo Island

'K I' as the locals refer to it, is an interesting mix of beaches, sand dunes and farmland side by side with national parks.  Just a ferry or plane trip across the water from Adelaide the capital of this state, it is a popular vacation destination for locals and those who choose South Australia travel from further away.

We visited the Remarkable Rocks while were on Kangaroo Island and discovered that they had been aptly named.  At first look they appear to be a group of granite boulders balanced above the ocean.  Covered with orange lichen, they looked spectacular at sunset.  We were joined by a colony of Australian sea loins at Seal Bay and visited an Australian sheep farm and a working dairy at Island Pure Sheep Diary. Their cheeses and yogurts were impressive.

South Australia’s Outback

This is best visited in the Southern Hemisphere winter to avoid the extreme heat there during SA’s summer.  We traveled through the ancient Flinders Ranges during August to breath taking Wilpena Pound where we took a flight over this enormous natural amphitheater.  Plenty of kangaroos and emus appeared during our stay.

When we reached Cooper Pedy (sometimes referred to as the opal capital of the world) it left us speechless.  We’ve never seen anything like it.  The landscape is moonlike covered with ‘craters’ from opal mine tailings.  We stayed in an underground hotel and visited an underground church.  Underground accommodation is substantially cooler here during summer.  We enjoyed the locals who were happy to share their opal mining stories over a beer.  Needless to say, one of us had to buy some opals as a memento of this part of our South Australia travel!
