Evidence of dreamtime aborigines Australia’s original inhabitants can still be found even in large urban cities like Sydney. Yes, you don’t need to venture into the far outback to learn much about Australia’s Aboriginal heritage.
Some of the best ways to do this are through hearing Dreamtime stories, studying Aboriginal art and dance and discovering their special bush medicine and unique bush food called ‘tucker’. But where can you find authentic examples of this and avoid commercialized hype at the same time?
Within the Sydney area there are parks where you can see famous rock paintings and engraving. You will need to hire a car to reach these parks but if you can arrange this transport and enjoy bush walking a visit to Kuringai National Park will reveal a large number of engravings and hand prints stenciled with red ochre. The Australia Walkabout Wildlife Park at Calga just north of Sydney has Aboriginal Heritage sites and tours lead by ranges who explain the indigenous culture of Dreamtime aborigines.
The Australia Walkabout Wildlife Park is home of the Darkinjung people. Rangers lead educational walks about bush medicine. This is largely derived from the local plants. Plants that sweeten drinks, make glue, spears and even bush soap all still exist in this park and feature during these walks. Bush ‘tucker’ from other plants is cooked in a cooking hole. Boomerang throwing and face painting with ochre is on offer during the day while night tours with Dreamtime stories under the stars are also available.
Sydney’s famous Taronga Zoo runs vacation programs for children that are just as interesting for adults! The life of Dreamtime aborigines is explored through Aboriginal singing, dancing, bush tucker trails as well as indigenous art and craft.
Sydney’s Australian Museum has some of the best selections of ornaments, hunting implements and information about Dreamtime aborigines. It’s well worth a visit.
The Museum of Sydney has a Gadigal Place display highlighting the first contact between Aborigines and Europeans and the Australian National Maritime Museum explores aboriginal maritime traditions.
The PowerHouse Muesum has a wonderful exhibition entitled ‘Yingalung yenu;Women’s Journey’ and there is a Warrane exhibit of the Cardigal people at the Rock’s Discovery Museum.
Dreaming stories told as part of the ‘Under the Sydney Stars’ exhibition at the Sydney Observatory provide another insight into the lives and beliefs of the Dreamtime aborigines right in the center of Australia’s largest metropolis.
So check these places out to discover some of Australia’s authentic indigenous history while you're in Sydney and save precious time during your visit Down Under.
